Emergency Contraception

If you have had unprotected sex - that is, sex without using any contraception or think your contraception might have failed, you can use emergency contraception.

There are three types of emergency contraception:

  • Emergency contraceptive pill- Levonelle -commonly called the "morning after pill " taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
  • Emergency contraceptive pill - ellaOne- this is a new method taken from 72 hours up to 120 hours after unprotected sex.
  • The emergency intrauterine device (IUD)- the most effective method can be fitted up to 120 hours after unprotected sex or up to 5 days after expected day of ovulation.

If you act quickly, emergency contraception will usualy prevent pregnancy.
