Pregnancy testing
A pregnancy test should always be carried out on an early morning specimen of urine, that is the very first one in the morning when you get up.
When should you request a pregnancy test?
- If your period is overdue
- If your period is not overdue but was a lot lighter or shorter than usual.
Where do I go for a pregnancy test?
These are available:-
- To buy over the counter at any pharmacist
- G.P. Surgeries.
- Family Planning Service.
How much do they cost?
There is a charge at the surgery and from the chemist. The Family Planning Service offers them free.
What if the test is negative?
You would be advised to see a doctor to discuss the results. You may be advised to return with another specimen.
What if it is positive?
You will have to discuss this with a doctor. If you wish to continue with the pregnancy you will need to see your G.P where ante - natal care will be arranged for you and your baby.
If you are unsure about your pregnancy you are not alone as many women have mixed feelings when they find they are pregnant, even if they have been pregnant before. This is quite normal and understandable. Your doctor will be there to discuss your anxieties. He or she may also refer you to a counsellor who will help you to talk through your feelings in a non - judgmental and non-directional way, and will help you to explore all the issues. This free confidential counselling service is offered by the Health and Social Services Department through the Family Planning Service. The counsellor's confidential 'help line' telephone number is:- 07781 126439.
